Here in Alberta, infection prevention and control in dentistry is governed by specific guidelines. Most of these guidelines are common sense. As a rule, anything a dentist uses in the mouth is sterilised or single-use disposable. You may be interested to know of some of the measures that dental clinics take to protect both our clients and our staff from disease transmission:

Staff vaccinated against HBV and influenza (annual)
- Ultrasonic instrument cleaning equipment and industrial “dishwasher”-style instrument cleaners
- Our steriliser bank includes an 81L hospital grade unit
- Sterilisers are tested daily with biologic monitors cultured in our on-site incubators
- Sterilisers are tested with chemical indicator strips/tape in each load
- Every steriliser load with implantable device materials is biologic monitored, and the instruments held in quarantine until passed
- All surgery is performed using single-use packaged sterile water or saline irrigation
- Restorative handpiece (drill) units are flushed and on a closed, waterline disinfected system
- Sterile gloves, isolation gowns, and drapes are used for implant and grafting surgeries
Our new clinic was inspected by the Alberta Dental Association & College shortly after opening. We also recently arranged to have an infection control consultant review our clinic protocols.
